The Components of Optimal Supplementation

From the beginning of the discussion, Step 1: Correcting Your Deficiencies, I have been clear that you will not be able to “eat your way” to optimal health. Since the beginning of this chapter, we have been describing how you can best construct your diet to come as close to optimal as possible, and even more importantly, how not to allow your diet selection to adversely affect your health.

It will be correct supplementation that will take you the rest of the way. It is more than likely accurate that you can supplement your way to health if we can assume that your diet selection will take you part of the way there. The best way to leave the optimization issue is that between the two, you will be able to accomplish your objective.

I have been practicing integrative medicine for over twenty years. In that period of time, the most frequently asked question by the patients I have consulted with has been, “Hey, Doc, what should I take?” Of course, the requested response was an attempt by the patient to find out what supplements I would recommend that could allow him to correct his deficiency status. The question was earnest and simple, and it was assumed I would provide him with a list of products he was willing to purchase upon my recommendation.

For at least seventeen of those twenty years, I could not bring myself to recommend any product that could put this question to rest. No matter what I would have suggested, the patient was poised to purchase. I was not pleased enough with and did not think enough of any product or product line to put my reputation behind it.

I know it would have been easy to decide on a group of products that had high-quality constituents and that the patient would certainly have benefited from having taken them. As you will soon have explained, those supplements would not have been optimal.

Due to the fact that my answer to the simple question about what supplements to take turned out to be my opportunity to educate patients on how to construct a supplement program, it is only proper for me to do the same for you. After that explanation concluded, my final instruction was to advise the patient to find a quality company that produced reputable supplements and that also had their reputation and integrity to protect.

Instead of a five-minute simple response by naming products, my discussion of the components of an optimal supplement program took forty-five minutes to an hour to complete. The time involved did not matter.

What did matter was that the patient left my office educated on the subject of supplementation in a way he never anticipated but that made him an enlightened consumer. From that point forward, he was capable of making choices concerning all supplements that allowed him to become a much better patient than he was before meeting me.

This teaching session became known as “The Six Basic Components of Any Supplement Program.
